The last time I went to Harlem, the first thing I saw after walking out of the subway station was an Urban Outfitters.

My mom’s drawings have always been pretty adorable. She used to draw for her students every single day. How many drawings a year was that? 120? Sheesh!

Of shakin’ the jar..
So I have always been some kind of a writer. But writing a blog is a new experience and so pardon me if this is rough around the edges. Why have a blog? Well…
We are about to make a BIG change in our lives; this seemed like a good time to share my thoughts as we go forward. See, my husband & I are moving in the opposite direction of every other retiree in the US. We are going NORTH, north to Minnesota, land of my birth, instead of SOUTH, say, to Florida where everyone thinks people our ages should go. We’ve been living in the south for about 40 years and both of us yearned for a change! As in…a big city life. So we are headed to a very urban, very industrial loft/condo we bought in St. Paul,MN, and we are leaving the Alabama home in mid-February, very possibly the worst time anyone ever thought to move to that region. So be it. This is an adventure and it is a major deal. In fact, it turns out that moving is a very big psychological deal-one of those on the list of the “10 MOST STRESSFUL LIFE EVENTS.” Yep. We are leaving the big yard, the lush trees, the azaleas, and the days and days of brain-baking heat and humidity, trading it all for a concrete, brick and board home within a giant building that has big beams, exposed duct work, a very stark vibe, and days and days of bone-chilling, teeth rattling winter weather. Are we crazy? OK– I just want well-wishers, because truthfully, this DOES shake me to my core, and out of any comfort zone I have had for a very long time! Sorting through our stuff is even more stressful. Leaving a home I’ve lived in for 35 years is tough. But we have good reasons and to the answer of “Why do this?” I say, “Why not?” I wanted a different world, filled with diversity, cultural events, challenges and yes, a change of seasons. We already have a beautiful lake place a few hours away from our new home and this will be the country escape. There are connections to this city, this state.
Not saying this is easy. We are of an age where adventures aren’t so common and we feel fortunate to have some resources and health to be able to give this a try. Oh, and no sidewalk to shovel! A park across the street; lots of places to explore and some hope that this will be exciting and rewarding. Are we shaking the jar? Yes, and spilling the contents. Susie Cook
My mom has a Tumblr now! I’m not sure she updates it yet, but follow it anyway!
